The statue is built in memory of Princess Isabel, daughter of Pedro ruler of Brazil. The construction of this statue was proposed in the 18th century but it was not built at that time.

The Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro asked for the statue to be built on top of the mountain so that the entire city could see the statue. This statue was created when Brazil became independent of Portugal.

Statue was designed by Carlos Oswal and Silva Kostamistek and sculptor Paul Landowski designed the head and hands of the statue. The construction of the statue was completed on 21 October 1931. In the year 2002, it created escalators and passageways so that visitors could reach the statue.
